Are Competitor Comparisons a Good Sales Tool?

We are frequently asked if we have a feature comparison chart to competitive products.
The answer is yes but we qualify our answer and here are the reasons why.
Competition is healthy and though our competitors products have some similarities to our own, there are also some major differences. Many of our Reseller Partners share their knowledge of the competition. This information along with our own research enables us to have responses to questions posed by prospective customers.
However, competitive comparisons from one vendor about another are always very difficult to produce. Unless you have someone who is totally independent take each product through its paces, and do a feature by feature comparison, you will never have a complete and unbiased document.
In my honest opinion the best way for a prospective customer to do a feature comparison, would be to do a trial install of the product. Then they could build some simple process and see in-situ which is easier to use and which one they prefer.
If that is not feasible then contact both vendors. Find out if they have a comparison document and then compare the two side by side.
It is possible that we don’t know about new features and functionality in their product and that we need to update our information. And in reverse they may not have the latest updated information about TaskCentre. As we all know, it is virtually impossible to stay ahead of everyone’s software updates or product changes.
I am not going to post any comparisons here, I don't think it is appropriate in such a public forum. However, if you are considering TaskCentre and want to discuss comparative products:
I believe that it is good for one vendor to understand and have a comparison of their competition, but I am not convinced that it is a sales tool that should be sent out to prospects - do you agree?
